RESiNMAG.COM: How would you descrIbe you own work in a sentence?
ASHTON HOWARD: BADD ASS, just kidding Will, No, lets see....My work is out of pure love for nature and the ocean, combinded with a vivid imagination, I try and create places that leave your imagination wondering.
RESiNMAG.COM: How old were you when you realized you had artistic talent?
ASHTON HOWARD: About 18
RESiNMAG.COM: What was your first completed piece of?
ASHTON HOWARD: I was totally into graffiti for many years. We would skate behind old grocery stores and run down buildings and hit the train yards as well. It was probably a crazy character or huge piece of what I was writing at the time.
RESiNMAG.COM: Is that when you new that is what you wanted to do with your life?
ASHTON HOWARD: No, I just wanted to skate and surf and do art, I had no idea until I was about 23 or 24 that it would be cool to do this for a living.
RESiNMAG.COM: What kind of schooling have y
ou had?
ASHTON HOWARD: I attended SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) from 99-00 and then took off for California in 01.
RESiNMAG.COM: I have known of you and your art work since the year 2000. How would you describe your art back then and the transformation to your art of today?
ASHTON HOWARD: Wow, lots of studying and experimenting. I have really developed a love for photography and begun to “slow down” and really study lighting, composition and think about my art a lot more. I enjoy the entire process, rather than saying, “ well, I am going to paint a tropical scene today”, I use all my experiences, inspirations and daily influences to try and put together some really great pieces. I also think, just growing older, traveling, and the ups and down
s in ones life will in the fullness of time have complete influence on ones art. I believe change and carrying an open mind will without a doubt contribute to the growth and full potential of any artist.
RESiNMAG.COM: Do you paint any thing like you used to or have you fully moved on?
ASHTON HOWARD: Well, yes, I will always paint from my heart which lie in nature and the ocean so my subjects are similar. I think my art has changed in a sense of style and new ideas have been born, but my influence will always be the natural world and beautiful elements of our oceans.
RESiNMAG.COM: What or who inspires you to paint?
ASHTON HOWARD: Every beautif
ul day the sun shines, my wife, family and friends.
RESiNMAG.COM: Who are some of your favorite artists?
ASHTON HOWARD: Dali, Chuck Close, MC Escher, Monet, Roy Tabora
RESiNMAG.COM: What do your wife and family think of your art work?
ASHTON HOWARD: I have been blessed to have such a supportive wife and family. My parents always encouraged me and have been in awe of my talents. My wife Emilie has been there from the very beginning and we have built our business together from the early days of Laguna Beach CA.
RESiNMAG.COM: What are your working on now and tell us about it?
ASHTON HOWARD: Man, lots of new and exciting things are happening. I have been working on an amazing commission piece for one of my collectors in Texas. It is a tribute to Pink Floyd and also has a very significant meaning to my life. It has been really great working on this piece and is almost finished. As you can imagine it has a very surreal theme and of course is involved with the ocean. This piece has inspired some incredibly fantastic thoughts and I have 3 more compositions lined up for my “Fantasy Series”. I have also been experimenting with a new airbrush that I recently purchased. It has helped in the creation of new ideas and I am toying with the idea of painting motorcycles on the side. I have a couple helmets lined up and I am really looking forward to seeing how this will influence my current art; it already has!
RESiNMAG.COM: What are your overall goals as an artist?
ASHTON HOWARD: To be the absolute best I can be and continue to always grow and try new things. I want to Master a variety of different mediums all recognizable as my own personal style.
