RESiNMAG.COM: Where were you born?

TREVOR MEZAK: Glendale, Ca

RESiNMAG.COM: Where do you reside?

TREVOR MEZAK: San Juan Capistrano, Ca

RESiNMAG.COM: How old were you when you realized you had artistic talent?

TREVOR MEZAK: When I was 9, I won a contest in my hometown. My piece hung in the window of a local bank.

RESiNMAG.COM: What was that piece of?

TREVOR MEZAK: It was of a Taxi cab and downtown L.A.

RESiNMAG.COM: Is that when you knew that is what you wanted to do with your life?

TREVOR MEZAK: No, art was just a hobby. I really wanted to pursue my surfing.

RESiNMAG.COM: What style do you paint?

TREVOR MEZAK: Impressionistic.

RESiNMAG.COM: How would you describe your own work in a sentence?

TREVOR MEZAK: Fast and loose.

RESiNMAG.COM: What does your family think of your artwork?

TREVOR MEZAK: “My family loves it. They are all very supportive, my biggest fans”!

RESiNMAG.COM: Who as artists do you admire?

TREVOR MEZAK: My favorite artist is Richard MacDonald. He’s an incredible sculptor and I respect his work.

RESiNMAG.COM: What kind of art schooling have you had?

TREVOR MEZAK: I’m self-taught for the most part. My style comes from trial and error. It can be extremely frustrating, but it’s been my best teacher.

RESiNMAG.COM: Do you get nervous before a gallery opening?

TREVOR MEZAK: No… I feel very confident when it comes to my artwork. Plus, I enjoy meeting and talking to new people.

RESiNMAG.COM: Do you need to be inspired to paint?

TREVOR MEZAK: Definitely. That’s the key to a great painting.

RESiNMAG.COM: What or who inspires you to paint?

TREVOR MEZAK: Before I paint, I go surfing. Surfing always makes me feel great. There’s always loud music and the smell of coffee in my studio when I’m working.

RESiNMAG.COM: Where do you do most of your painting?

TREVOR MEZAK: My studio that’s at my house.

RESiNMAG.COM: Where would you like Trevor Mezak, the artist, to be in 5 yrs?

TREVOR MEZAK: I would love for people to be able to recognize a Mezak painting at first glance.

RESiNMAG.COM: How do you want your art to be seen or described by other people?

TREVOR MEZAK: I would like my art to be seen as timeless, not trendy.

RESiNMAG.COM: Are you presently making your living as an artist?

TREVOR MEZAK: I am making a living as an artist. A lot of artists make the mistake of making their art too personal and don’t want to let it go. Be willing to sell and then create more.

RESiNMAG.COM: If you were not doing art what would you be doing?

TREVOR MEZAK: I don’t know…but art would come out in whatever I was doing.

RESiNMAG.COM: How has your work evolved over the years?

TREVOR MEZAK: The first gallery that carried me had me try different styles. The gallery director believed in my talent, but didn’t think I’d found my style yet. I was trying a new style weekly. It was mentally exhausting! It was like trying to reinvent the wheel over and over. When I finally picked up a palette knife, I knew I had found my own style.

RESiNMAG.COM: When and how did the playing card series come about?

TREVOR MEZAK: As a kid, I played poker with my dad. I would stare at the face cards…talk about a-tell. The designs always intrigued me. When I found my own style, I wanted to try it on canvas.

RESiNMAG.COM: Do you have any advice or wise words for up and coming artists?

TREVOR MEZAK: Never give up. Don’t let one critic’s opinion get you down. Everyone’s taste is different.

RESiNMAG.COM: What are you working on right now?

TREVOR MEZAK: I’m sketching Joker’s for my playing card series, trying to find the next painting.

RESiNMAG.COM: Anything you would like to plug?

TREVOR MEZAK: Yes… I’m starting a surfing brand of clothing called VOID Syndicate. We’re shooting to be in stores next summer.http://trevormezak.com
