RESiNMAG.COM: How did you become a band?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: 2008 Daniel, Peter, Tim started playing music together at the end of their senior year in high school. Before that Peter and Daniel played guitar and drums together off and on, whenever they wanted to for fun.. One year after Tim, Peter, Daniel were playing together as a band they met Mike at AFRICAN CORNER in FV, CA. (Now in Costa mesa) Mike showed up with his sax and Peter called him over and we created some music for the first time ever with Mike.. We (Tim, Peter, Daniel) were blown away by the sax and asked mike later that night if he could show up to some practices and play with us.. He was very flakey at first, but we called ourselves a four piece band..
RESiNMAG.COM: Where did the name THE ORiGiNALiTES come from?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: At first we had a paper with like 100 names on it.. Peter and Daniel liked the name The Originals because we wanted to make all original music.. But Peter said there was already a 60’s band with that name. Soon after Peter suggested The Originalites, because now we have SAX in the group and can play SKA music. OTHER ska bands – The Skatalites, The Aggrolites, ETC. SO we added ITES at the end. It was undecided for weeks until finally it sank in and The Originalites was the name!
RESiNMAG.COM: How did you meet and how long have you been together?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: Tim, Peter, Daniel went to high school together, but Peter and Tim had gone to school together since elementary. We met Mike at a local African shop where we occasionally set up and played with the drum circle. He played with us without ever meeting before hand and we were stoked to have found such a talented Saxophonist. With the addition of Mike we have been together for Two years this month, DEC.
RESiNMAG.COM: How many albums do you have?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: We have TWO albums that can be purchased on our website – theoriginalites.com Still working on the completion of our first Professional Studio Album from 17th Street Studios w/Lewis Richards.
RESiNMAG.COM: How would you describe your own music?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: We would call it Energetic, Dynamic and Vibrant.. GENRE - SKA/DUB/PUNK but also incorporate Latin and psychedelic styles.
RESiNMAG.COM: How has your music evolved since you have been playing together?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: We have become much tighter and powerful over the years as a band. We like to keep our minds open to many different styles of music and stay original. Our music has evolved with the addition of MIKE’s SAX and everyone’s influences mixing together and pouring out into our own original creations..
RESiNMAG.COM: Any creative differences among the band?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: Peter is influenced by PUNK music and SKA. Tim is influenced by Dub and Classic rock, Daniel is influenced by Classic Rock and Latin music. Mike is influenced by Classic rock, Jazz and Bosa Nova.
RESiNMAG.COM: What are the bands long term goals?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: I would say short term and long term goals are - Get songs on the RADIO, Record first full length Studio Album. Keep making new songs. Tour California and the US. Then Europe and Japan, South America. Have our own studio recording house/room where we can experiment and record our own music with professional equipment and not have to pay a producer for something we know how to do.
RESiNMAG.COM: Any schooling for anyone in the group?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: Daniel is currently enrolled at OCC where he takes General Ed and Music Classes for Music Major.
RESiNMAG.COM: Do you have a record label if not, how did you put out the albums, any help with funding?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: We do not .. I guess were on the 17th street record label but we have not we are working on our Pro-Studio album from 17th street records. Also there are many songs that need to be completed. And just getting ourselves out there everyday by going skating, surfing, and playing shows to be seen and recognized as a band. Completed our full album. The albums we have so far have been recorded live in TIM’s garage with his laptop and a couple of mics. We worked for the money to record at the 17th street studio, and family and friends have been helpful in supporting us at our shows.
RESiNMAG.COM: What are you currently working on?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: We are working on our first full-length album produced by 17th street records. Also we have many songs that need to be completed. But also just staying together and going skating, surfing and playing shows to get ourselves out there and be recognized as a band.
RESiNMAG.COM: Can you explain how the writing process works?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: Well Daniel has written many songs on his own and then we make them as a band and modify them. Tim also has written many songs that he shows us and then we work on them as a band and MIKE and Daniel write lyrics. Also we have written songs by just jamming and suddenly we have a new song that just needs lyrics provided by Daniel and Mike. Peter also takes part in writing lyrics. We all can write songs as individuals and then later we spice them up in the garage when we are all together.
RESiNMAG.COM: What was your BEST show experience?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: The best one was probably going up to Hombolt County, CA where we played the SKAberville Festival with The Untouchables. That was a great trip for the most part and we had a lot of good times and bad times that we have grown wiser from.
RESiNMAG.COM: What was your WORST show experience?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: The worst was probably when we played a Battle of the Bands at UCI. It was raining most of the time and it was outdoors and they had no tarp or cover for us. The lady in charge, a student there, was really unorganized and couldn’t tell us where to park or what to do with our equipment. We had to ask all the other bands what they did. Then after everything was done we didn’t win anything and some bands didn’t get to play because they were so unorganized.
RESiNMAG.COM: Any lessons learned that you would like to share with young musicians?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: YES, Leave your egos somewhere else and don’t bring unnecessary drama and stress into the band because you are having a bad day or something. Don’t take any comments or criticism personal because it’s strictly Business in our case. Don’t ever ever lie or be dishonest in your answers or responses and don’t be late to any event, show, or practice, or meeting. TIME is MONEY!! Always know that your band mates are you friends and your family and that they will always have your back. Give each other hugs after an argument or dispute so that everyone can feel the love. MOST of all – PRACTICE your ass off when your alone and with the band. Take practice seriously and improve everyday as much as possible. Everyone is equal no one is better or worst as long as everyone puts forth the same effort to the success of the band. And last… BE ORIGINAL!
RESiNMAG.COM: Can you share one good story that comes from being on the road!
THE ORiGiNALiTES: Oh man, there are too many but one good one is we were on the 405 North coming back from a show. And far off in the distance we see a lot of light coming towards us on the opposite side of the freeway. We thought it was a Cop with his lights on or something turns out when we get closer it was some guy trying to get away from the Police and both tires on the left side of the car were gone and he was driving on the rims. Sparks were flying ten feet high, it was so bright, and he passes us and chasing after him were like 4 police cars.. Man that was crazy to see that.
RESiNMAG.COM: Anyone that you would like to thank for financial or emotional support?
THE ORiGiNALiTES: Yes, we would like to thank our families and friends for the support and motivation. Also our fans for coming out to shows when it’s far away or raining or cost too much money. Thank you Jack Zachette for the stickers and website and helping us with our problems within the band. Special thanks to the Frankeny Family, the Fontes Family, the Belk Family and the Tello Family for providing us with instruments and a healthy happy life and for believing in us and teaching us to chase our dreams and make them reality.
THANK you Very much…We Love All of You!
